How Does 3D Photography Work

Looking at a 3D (3-dimensional) photograph can be exciting because it gives you an illusion of depth, with the image appearing like a real version of the object photographed.

One may wonder how such a photograph can be shot and how the images in it appear to be in 3D even though the photograph itself, whether in print form or on slide or on screen, is in a two-dimensional plane with no depth dimension.

To understand how 3D photography (also called stereoscopy) works, it is important to know how this illusion of depth is achieved.

What is a 3d camera?

A 3D camera is the latest in technology ensuring that ultimate photographs can be taken and displayed outside of the studio. The early technology for 3D cameras was extremely limited; therefore, the process was complicated and did not achieve great results.

The imagery that is produced through the 3D camera is similar to looking at an object in tandem. Depth perception is vital when analyzing any image through a 3D camera.

The imagery involved with 3D is not a new concept, and there have been people experimenting with different ideas for many years. The process of 3D images has always been popular in movies and books, however, very few people transferred this to a camera.

For many years, the concept of 3D imagery was thought to be a novelty, however, today it is becoming more popular.

The 3D camera has far more features and accessories to ensure that clear, crisp images can be taken and produced. The early stages of the 3D camera would have used a slider bar, which allowed two identical images to be produced.

The 3D Cinema At Home

I love going to the movies. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it. Since 3D movies have become all the rage I enjoy it even more now. I don’t need much excuse to go and experience the wonders of the fantastic new effects that 3D promises. Luckily for me I have four little girls who give me the perfect excuse to see all the latest kids animations with 3D effects.

3D movies work by making sure each eye sees a different image to the other, both taken from a slightly different perspective.

Because our eyes are separated slightly they each see the world from a different perspective. 3D movies mimic this effect thus giving the illusion of depth on a 2D screen. Whatever method of seeing 3D you are using they all use this same principle but go about it in slightly different ways.

I love going to the movies. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it. Now that we have 3D movies I’m like a little kid in a candy store. You don’t have to twist my arm to get me to experience the joys of a well made 3D experience. Fortunately I have four little girls who also like an outing to the movie theater and enjoy a good 3D film as much as the next person and not just movies made for girls either.

3D movies work by making sure each eye sees a different image to the other, both taken from a slightly different perspective.

As each eye perceives the world from a slightly different perspective due to them being about 2 inches apart this effectively mimics the way we see the real world and creates a more realistic 3D image on a 2D screen. Every 3D image or movie you view uses this same principle but may go about it in a slightly different manner.
